For those sports fields where it is not (fully) possible, desired or even allowed to drain water into the subbase underneath, Schmitz Foam Products developed its shock pad with built-in lateral drainage channels.
The ProPlay D-version includes integrated drainage channels on the under side of the shock pad to allow increased water flow in the plane of the shock pad.
For installations where additional (horizontal) drainage is needed or desired, ProPlay-23D and ProPlay-20D is the cost effective solution.
This could include new build fields with an impermeable base or impermeable liner as part of the turf system, or a replacement field with an existing stone base that does not offer proper drainage capacity for the installation of the new turf.
The ProPlay D-version shock-absorbing pad with built-in horizontal drainage channels can be installed without an impermeable liner if you want to benefit from both its vertical and horizontal drainage capabilities.
If vertical drainage isn’t wanted, you simply install our D-version with impermeable foil. By providing the field horizontal water drainage capabilities you can accomplish a great saving in both time and costs to take away the need for digging out the entire subbase.
Drainage distance in violent rain
This graph indicates how much rainfall (in millimeters per hour) a field can handle in relation to its width (in meters), based upon a slope of 0.6% without rainwater rising above the ProPlay-Sport.
For example, in a situation of violent rain (> 50 mm per hour) the maximum drainage distance of the ProPlay-Sport23D is approximately 40 m.
Width of a typical soccer field
With a typical soccer field being 70-80 m wide, 40 m is the perfect drainage distance to smoothly transport rain water from the center of the field to the sides of the field. Even after violent rain the soccer field is ready to be played on instantly.

with horizontal drainage
This project features a four-story parking garage topped by a 240ft by 360ft artificial turf recreational field with ProPlay-Sport23D shock- and drainage pad to be used for student flag football, soccer and lacrosse.
El Alto in Bolivia is the highest major metropolis in the world, with anaverage elevation of 4,150 m. It makes this field the highest altitude FIFA Quality Pro certified field in the world featuring ProPlay®-Sport23D shock- and drainage pad.
