VDA 270 is a standardized method for evaluating the odor characteristics of interior trim materials in vehicles. Its purpose is to ensure that materials comply with the highest OEM standards for comfort and quality.
The test is conducted under controlled conditions: RoFoam samples are placed in special glass jars and then heated in an oven at 80°C for 4 hours. After heating, the jars are cooled for 10 minutes to approximately 60°C. At least three panelists then evaluate the samples by briefly lifting the lid and smelling them. The odor is assessed on a six-point scale:
1. not perceptible
2. barely perceptible, not disturbing
3. clearly perceptible, not disturbing
4. disturbing
5. strongly disturbing
6. nauseating
The test result is considered valid if the panelists give the same rating or if their scores differ by no more than one point. In such cases, the average rating is used.
The odor test is a key element of quality assurance at Schmitz Foam Supply. Our RoFoam solutions consistently meet the highest standards for both performance and sensory comfort. Test results show that RoFoams always achieve a rating of 3 or lower. Meaning any odor is at most clearly noticeable, but never disturbing. This ensures our customers can rely on RoFoams to be free from unwanted odors while fully meeting the strict requirements of the global automotive industry.
